ERF car seat until 2 years of age

Postby Ruby » Mon Mar 28, 2011 10:09 am

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) are going to update recommendations for rear facing car seats. Heres what I saw on their website :

What to consider when positioning carseats for toddlers

New research indicates that toddlers are more than five times safer riding rear-facing in a car safety seat up to their second birthday. Following are some safety tips for car seat use:

All infants should ride rear-facing in either an infant car seat or convertible seat.

If an infant car seat is used, the infant should be switched to a rear-facing convertible car seat once the maximum height (when the infant’s head is within 1 inch of the top of the seat) and weight (usually 22 pounds to 32 pounds) have been reached for that infant seat as suggested by the car seat manufacturer.

Toddlers should remain rear-facing in a convertible car seat until they have reached the maximum height and weight recommended for the model, or at least the age of 2.

A lot of people dont seem to realise the importance of rearfacing i know i didnt when i had DS1 is wasnt till i had DS2 and the internet that i realised about it even then i turned DS2 at 13mths.
My pet hate is seeing babies and children in wrong seats for there age and weight, i used to drive my sister and friends mad with reasons to keep their lo's RF not that they lisened

I know there is a few countries that you have to keep children rf till the age of 4.

i never knew this either, i always thought one they were about 8 mths that you turn the seat around. with the pram im getting you get the "bucket" seat (dont know the right name) so bump will be in that for a while anyway.

GAB bubs should be in the carrytot seat till about 15mths depending on their weight, check what weight your car seat is suitable for up to, also once bubs eyes arent over top of seat iykwim.
The bones in a babies neck arent properly formed till over 12mths so if ff in a car seat and god forbid there was an accident baby could be badly hurt or killed where as if RF there neck doesnt take as much of the impact iykwim.
