Call the Midwife? or Go to Docs?

Postby TheNewMrs » Wed Nov 16, 2011 10:53 am

Girls Ive been hearing so much advice on different issues you should talk to your midwife about. My problem is I dont know if I have a midwife!! I did have my 12 week app with the hosp but the midwife didnt really spend much time talking with me about my questions she just took all my details. Maybe its just coz a close cousin in the UK is due around the same time as me but everytime we talk she says "oh you should call your midwife and ask" Which would be great if I knew I could!!

How do you know who your looking to speak to?
How do you know whats a midwife and what a doctor issue?
Do any of you actually know who your midwife is?

I am so confused about all of this!!

I didn't know who my midwife was until I was gona give birth! Basically I was told that if it's a question about going in to labour or waters breaking and stuff like that ring the labour ward where the midwives are! or if it's anything to do with general pregnancy ring your doctor! Now I don't know if it's the same for your hospital but that's how it was for me!

When I went in for my ante natal appt the midwife introduced herself like this: Hi my name is Caroline and I'll be your midwife. Now I don't know if she meant she'd be my midwife taking my details that day or she'd be my midwife when I'm in hospital or what she meant. If I have an issue with a general pregnancy query I'll ring my GP, although at the weekend there I had a very specific query so I rang the labour ward and the nurse on the phone was fantastic!! HTH!

I didnt think we were allocated a specific midwife.. but I ring the maternity hospital anytime I have a query and just ask to be put onto someone who can answer a question for me.
