Colouring hair

Postby babybearmum » Fri Sep 23, 2011 11:02 am

Hi all, I know this is a silly question but is it safe to colour your hair when pregnant? I am 12 weeks and my hairdressers said it's my call, but that women come in all the time to get their hair dyed. Before I do any research myself, I just wonder if anyone here knows? The hairdresser uses Wella. I usually get a half head of highlights done, but was thinking of an all over colour instead. It's really just to cover the greys - only get it done every 6 months. Obviously if there is any proven danger, I won't bother at all. It's just vanity!

Hi there!
Personaly I dont colour my hair since I found out that I'm pregnant. Some doctors advise to stay away from hair dyes when expecting, but studies have not linked these products to birth defects. It is very little chemicals absorbed through the skin but it can give you a headache or your hair might react differently leaving you with a colour you dont expect! :)
Its up to you really! ;)

My hairdresser is also one of my closest friends so I asked him straight out what he'd recommend. He said that women come to him all the time for highlights when pregnant but he's not too keen on doing all over colours. He said its cause the highlights can be done in such a way that the colour doesn't touch the scalp but with an all over colour obviously it'd be all over your scalp.
This is just what he said to me but honestly I'd say each to their own! HTH hun :)

Im a hair stylist.

There is no evidence to suggest that ANY chemicals get absorbed into the bloodstream. There is also no evidence to suggest it is harmful to the baby, once its just COLOUR (on the scalp) or highlights (off the scalp), a lot of my clients are getting a scalp bleach done for that really blonde all over look. The bleach is designed to be able to go directly on to the scalp, but the peroxide used is much higher than would be used with a colour so I refuse to use it on pregnant ladies. For the simple reason that the molecules of a higher peroxide are smaller and CAN enter the blood stream. So thats the only time I would advice AGAINST having your colour done when pregnant.

For those of you who wish to abstain from having your colour done, you can always use a colour shampoo that will give your hair a nice gloss, the john freda rage is lovely. Or go to a salon that uses the new INOA colour by L'Oreal.

Thanks a million NewMrs....really good to hear an expert opinion. I have dark brown hair and I have quite a few grey hairs - I don't do anything at home but just get warm highlights a few times a year with a brown colour simply to cover the grey bits. I think I will go for that again now, thank you! :-)

Hi TheNewMrs! :)
My hair is brown and I always get the highlights done but decided not to do it while I'm pregnant... Not looking great at the moment as its grown about 3 inches...If I use john freda range for blondes will that make my hair lighter or should I be using brunette? Or will that make the rest of the highlights brown?? :?
Thanks!

If your hair is brown and you get blonde highlights, john freda wont do a thing for you!
It really only works if you get a colour close to your natural. But theres no reason not to get highlights. The colour doesnt touch your scalp and there's no blood supply to your hair directly, so not a hope of chemicals transfering!
