Hi, I booked the first antenatal visit at both the Rotunda and the Coombe in Dublin. I got appointments, can I do the first visit in both and choose the hospital later? I don't know which one is better and I want to be sure to choose the right one. Thanks.

Hi Ella,

I haven’t heard of someone do that before. I think it’s a big waste of resources. Booking appointments can take several hours. It includes getting bloods, thorough medical history of you and your partners family, scan etc. I’m pretty sure you also submit your PPS number too.

Personally i would just pick one. If I was unsure I would ask someone. I attend the Coombe because I don’t like being in town, the parking is cheap and I think they have an excellent neonatal unit if there are complications. Their biggest public room is a 6 bed compared to 12 in some other hospitals and they only let you go 10 days over compared to 14 in others.

There is nothing to stop you swapping hospitals if you are unhappy with one. Maybe someone else will have advice here on which hospital they prefer but I have heard good things about both.

I agree it would be wasting people's time when maternity services are busy enough. Pick a hospital that is close to you for appointments and think of if you were in labour which one is easier to get to.
